A leader for Stafford

Brooke Post Office

After over 100 years of a presence, the United States Postal Service (USPS) has suspended service of the Brooke Post Office, with plans to make it a permanent closure. After numerous phone calls, letters, and even a public meeting, the citizens of the area were assured that this was a temporary situation, and that it would be re-opened. Months later, we are still with little success to getting the USPS to honor the promises that were have made in letters, phone calls and the public meeting.

The USPS sites a lack of appropriate "demographics" as a reason for closing this location, or not enough traffic. They suggest the post office on Route 1, north of the courthouse as an alternative location for people to use. This area of Stafford has some unique challenges with traffic in order to get to that location. What might appear on a map to be a five-minute drive, in reality can take well over thirty minutes.

Besides the historic value of this location, it is a practical location for a post office to service Stafford County citizens that cannot easily reach an alternative location. It is time for the citizens of Stafford , and in particular Brooke, to pull together and voice our commitment to the Post Office in Brooke.

Please take a moment to read the letter from Board of Supervisors Chairman Jack Cavalier as it outlines the events that have taken place.

I encourage you to send to our Virginia Senators and Congresswoman a letter to encourage their support in re-opening the Brooke Post office.
